You're 4 Months Old, Baby!

Dear Lucy,

I can't believe you are already 4 months old!!! Yesterday you had your 4 month well visit at the doctor's. Every time the doctor would say something like, "She is so strong!" or "She is so social!" you would flash her a very big smile as if you were just eating up the compliments and attention. We received good news that you don't have to take your Zantac for your reflux any more! Woohoo! You are still in the 97th percentile for height and 75th percentile for weight. I've begun the process of accepting the fact that you are going to be taller than me.

You had to get a couple of shots, which I was much more prepared for than last time. The nurse had me get your onesie back on so that as soon as she was done I could scoop you up and comfort you. I was dreading the pained look on your face that was sure to follow the shots, but I was so looking forward to holding you close, rubbing your back, and telling you it's ok. The nurse gave you one shot and....nothing. No tears, no crying, no nothing. Then the nurse said, "Now this next one is the one that is going to burn, so she will really get upset afterwards." Once again I braced myself for the crying and got into position to scoop you up. The nurse stuck you and your little lip stuck out followed by a couple of cries and then.....nothing. You were completely fine. I scooped you up anyway, rubbed your back, and said over and over, "It's ok," and you gave me a look like, "Yeah Mom, I know. I'm already over it." Oh boy.

Now that you are 4 months old here is a snippet of the kinds of things you like to do:

-You still LOVE to be outside. We walk out on the deck and explore the backyard several times a day. (I'm a little worried about what we will do during the winter months!) Simply going outside takes you from fussy to engaged in 2 seconds flat. I love to explore the backyard over and over with you. You are now reaching out at the branches that I pull towards you, running your little hands down the branches of soft little leaves.

-You also still really love bath time, although you are starting to get too long for your baby tub! You love to kick your legs and make the water splash. Your dad and I always put on some Island-y music for you to splash along to as if you have your own little tropical get-away during bath time. We all love to listen to Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley, and Jack Johnson.

-You really love all water. Now that you are a little older, you have been to the pool a couple of times and have really loved it, which makes your granddad (a lifetime swimmer) very happy. Your granddad is sure you are doing the breast stroke with your legs when you kick in your bouncy seat (another favorite of yours), so I'm sure he can't wait to teach you to swim.

-You really love to go to the grocery. I'm not sure where you get this from as grocery shopping has always been on my list of "If I have absolutely nothing else to do" or we have completely run out of food (usually the latter). You love to face out in your Baby Bjorn and help push the cart. I let you feel and "hold" everything we buy. I learned quickly to keep one hand on everything you are holding after you threw my coupons on the floor :P I always warn you before I open the freezers telling you it is going to be coooold. One day I'm sure you will figure out what I'm saying, but for now, I just talk and talk in your ear as we make our way through the grocery.

-You still really like to watch the tv. I try to get you out and about as much as possible, but during those down times in the living room the bright colors always catch your eye. I now have to turn off the tv when I feed you because you will strain your neck to watch the tv rather than eat....I'm hoping that is just a phase ;)

-You and I usually spend a lot of our day listening to music and dancing around the house. The pediatrician said that talking to you helps your development, and since my creativity for what to say often runs dry (even after stealing your very cool dad's material), I've turned to singing to help me talk to you more. And really, what's singing without dancing? I also love to sing my hometown and college fight song to you over and over...however I change the lyrics to be "We're loyal to you Lucy High..." and "Love and honor to our Lucy..." It makes you smile, but I'm not sure if it's because you love when I sing to you or you think I'm crazy for singing such weird songs to you. We also look in the mirror several times a day while I sing "Who's that baby?" instead of "Who's that lady?" from the swiffer commercials. Once again I'm not sure of the reason for your smile ;)

-Your laughs are still hard to get out of you. You flash smiles to those around you all day long, but laughs, now those are hard get. Your dad and I usually have to work very hard, almost breaking a sweat, tickling you and talking in a very animated voice to you. However a couple of days ago you discovered something much funnier than your two crazy parents...Arie the cat. You were cracking up at Arie's loud purring, which consequently made your dad and I crack up right along with you. Here we were, all three of us laughing our heads off, and Arie just purring away. It was one of those moments that I will never forget. (We have tried very hard to get you to laugh again at Arie purring, but I think Arie is starting to feel quite used and doesn't play along.)

Everyday with you brings something new. I can't believe how fast you are growing and learning. It's so hard to believe that 4 short months ago you were just a tiny little newborn all new to the world and completely unaware of what it had to offer you. Now you are smiling, laughing, reaching for everything around you, and making all sorts of adorable noises with your mouth. Every night your dad and I fall asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillows because you keep us moving about quite a bit. However it is so satisfying knowing that when I lay down to go to sleep at night I have lived the day to it fullest and don't have an ounce of energy left unused and wasted. Lucy, that's what you do to your parents' lives. You pack it to the brim with so many emotions, so much activity, so much personality, and well, everything!

Love,

Mom
